Confused about paddle shifters

I accidentally hit the paddle shifters in my car and noticed it shifted up and down a gear while still in "D." I've always just driven in regular drive without thinking about it, I've never owned a vehicle with these before, when are you actually supposed to use them?

Paddle shifters can be used even in D for quick manual control. Like downshifting for engine braking on hills or gearing up for a pass. If you don't touch them for a bit, the car usually switches back to full auto

Right, totally normal, paddle shifters give you manual control for things like hills or passing, but you can ignore them if you're just cruising . Accidentally tapping them in Drive just shifts a gear or 2, then it usually resets on its own. Nothing to worry about, you're good

Gotcha, that makes sense now. I didn't realize you could use them in D for stuff like that. I'll try the downshifting on hills and see how it feels in practice.

Thanks, that's reassuring. I was worried I might've messed something up, it is good to know it resets on its own and I can just ignore them if I'm cruising
